The northeast monsoon continues to batter Chennai, with heavy rains lashing the city for the second consecutive day. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the downpour is expected to persist over the next few days, with an orange alert issued for the region. Authorities are urging people to remain cautious.

Key areas of Chennai, including T. Nagar, Vela Cherry, and Anna Nagar, are experiencing severe waterlogging, causing gridlocks and halting traffic movement. Motorists struggled through knee-deep water, leading to long delays, while public transport services were disrupted. Pedestrians navigated flooded streets, and local businesses in affected areas reported a significant slowdown in operations due to the heavy rains.
While the central parts of Chennai experienced major waterlogging, suburban areas like Tamhbaram, Mudichur, and Pallikaranai were the worst hit. In these areas, floodwaters have entered homes, forcing some residents to evacuate to safer locations. Overflowing drains and poor storm water management have exacerbated the situation. Schools and colleges in the most affected areas have been declared closed for safety reasons.

The continuous rain has also affected essential services, particularly in the healthcare sector. Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, faced difficulties navigating through waterlogged streets, causing delays in reaching hospitals. Medical supplies were also delayed in transit due to the submerged roads, adding to the city's mounting concerns about its ability to manage emergencies during the downpour.
Chennai drainage systems are overwhelmed as they struggle to cope with the heavy rainfall. Despite efforts by the Greater Chennai Corporation to clear waterlogged streets using pumps, several low-lying areas remain flooded. Residents expressed frustration over the city's drainage infrastructure, pointing to the frequent flooding as a sign of insufficient planning and preparedness for heavy monsoons.
In response to the severe flooding, rescue operations have been ramped up across the city. Boats and other emergency equipment have been deployed in the worst-hit areas, where residents of low-lying regions have been evacuated to temporary shelters. Chief Minister MK Stalin held an emergency meeting with disaster management officials to ensure coordinated efforts and mobilize all available resources to tackle the crisis.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for districts surrounding Chennai, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall over the coming days. With more rain forecasted, there is a growing concern over further flooding, potential infrastructure damage, and disruptions to daily life. Residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies and follow government advisories for their safety.
